Richard Cornell, a.k.a. “Dick” or “Doc C” was one of the founders of the UCF Instructional Systems program. After 35 years at UCF (formerly Florida Technological University or FTU), he retired to pursue his world adventures. He still serves as co-chair or committee member to numerous Ph.D. students and is looking to that day when those students will become Dr.’s!

His interests varied along his career path ranging from media production to astronaut discretionary time, to commercial airline fatigue, to distance learning, and more recently, to Asian Pedagogy. His world travels mirrored his interests.

Over the past several years, Doc C has recruited many students from Taiwan and then China for our programs. He continually travels to those areas in search of new recruits.

He is convinced that our Instructional Systems and Instructional Technology graduates must possess a clear understanding of diverse global arenas, especially those related to preparation of instructional designers, researchers, and professors. The best way to do this, he says, is to take them to other countries, and he has done so for the past decade or more.

In his retirement he established his own company, House of Five Dragons, Ltd. It offers consulting services to Asian corporations and institutions, and he hopes to refer our Asian students to lucrative positions upon their return home. He also serves on the AECT and ICEM Boards and co-chairs the AECT Strategic Planning Task Force. In 2005, he goes to Kharkov, Ukraine as a Fulbright Senior Specialist.

Doc C was the recipient of three awards during the 2003 AECT Anaheim conference: International Division Distinguished Service Award, AECT Mentor Award, and AECT Distinguished Service Award. At his June 2003 Roast, he bid farewell to a packed room and promised everyone he’d be there for them when needed. He is.
