Graduate Admissions

Effective Spring 2005, the College of Education began requiring passing scores on either the GENERAL KNOWLEDGE TEST (GKT) or COLLEGE LEVEL ACADEMIC SKILLS TEST (CLAST) for admission to a TEACHER PREPARATION GRADUATE PROGRAM for those applicants with a GRE combined verbal and quantitative score of less than 1,000, as mandated by the Florida legislature. This is in addition to the GPA requirement of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of the undergraduate (earned bachelor’s degree) program and having a GRE score on file at the university.

Requirements for a Masters Degree

  • The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required of all graduate students.
  • For teacher preparation programs (generally, the Master of Arts), minimum requirements are a 3.0 GPA (last 60 semester hours of the undergraduate degree) AND a GRE score of at least 840 AND passing scores on the CLAST (College Level Academic Skills Test) or GKT (General Knowledge Test).
  • If the undergraduate GPA (last 60 semester hours of the undergraduate degree) is below a 3.0, a GRE score of at least 1000 is required for admission purposes.
  • For non-teacher preparation programs (generally, the Master of Education), minimum requirements are a 3.0 GPA (last 60 semester hours of the undergraduate degree) AND GRE score of 840. If you have below a 3.0 GPA (last 60 hours of the undergraduate degree), a score of at least 1000 is required for admission purposes.
  • A student seeking a Master of Education degree must show evidence that all coursework has been completed for the basic bachelor's level State of Florida teaching certificate. Master of Arts programs, available in some specialties, may be pursued without the student having previously completed certification courses.

For additional information about our graduate programs or to apply, please consult the Graduate Studies website at www.graduate.ucf.edu. The current Graduate Catalog is also available.

Students who have been formally admitted to a graduate program will be assigned a faculty advisor. The student will receive a letter identifying their assigned faculty advisor and is encouraged to make an appointment within the first nine (9) semester hours of graduate coursework.

How to Apply for a Masters Degree

Q:  WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO THE MASTER’S DEGREE?
A:  Our MA programs are typically for non-education majors who are seeking initial teacher certification or previously certified teachers in other content areas who are seeking add-on certification.  Admission criteria include:

  • A 3.0 GPA (last 60 credit hours of the undergraduate degree) and
  • A GRE score of 840 and
  • passing scores on the GKT (General Knowledge Test), which is one exam of a three part exam known as the FTCE (Florida Teacher Certification Exam).  NOTE:  If you attended a Florida institution for your bachelor’s degree and sat for and passed the CLAST (College Level Academic Skills Test) prior to July 2002, we can accept this score in lieu of the GKT.  No alternatives or waivers accepted for this exam.

OR

  • If GPA is below 3.0 GPA (last 60 credit hours of the undergraduate degree), then
  • A GRE score of 1000

Our MED programs are typically designed for teachers already certified in the content area to further their expertise and enhance their knowledge, skills, and dispositions.  Admission criteria include:

  • A 3.0 GPA (last 60 credit hours of the undergraduate degree) and
  • A GRE score of 840 and
  • Verification of professional teacher certification (not temporary certification) in the same field of graduate application

OR

  • If GPA is below 3.0 GPA (last 60 credit hours of the undergraduate degree) and
  • GRE score of 1000 and
  • Verification of professional teacher certification (not temporary certification)

Q:  HOW DO I APPLY FOR ADMISSION?
A:  Complete an online Graduate Application and Residency Form by going to the following web site:

www.graduate.ucf.edu

This web site includes all graduate application materials, required forms, information on financial assistance, and a complete UCF graduate catalog.

Click on APPLY ONLINE in the top right-hand corner of the web page and follow the instructions for completing and submitting your application online. Your application is not considered complete until you hit the SUBMIT button and include your online application fee payment of $30.00.

Q:  HOW DO I SEND MY TRANSCRIPTS TO UCF?
A:  If you are a graduate of a UCF undergraduate program, your transcript will be forwarded to the Division of Graduate Studies and placed in your application file.  All other transcripts must be requested by the applicant to be sent to the UCF Division of Graduate Studies.

Q:  HOW DO I REGISTER TO TAKE THE GRE?
A:  If you have not already completed and passed the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), you will be  required to register for and take the exam.  Registration for the exam may be accomplished by contacting:

Thomson Prometric Center
2301 Lucien Way  Suite 170
Maitland, FL  32751
(407) 875-8118

OR you may contact the GRE testing organization directly to have them register you locally:

1-800-GRE-CALL
1-800-473-2255

Preparatory courses are offered through the UCF Division of Continuing Education (407) 207-4920, Research Pavilion, Suite 265.

Q:   IF I TOOK THE GRE YEARS AGO, CAN I STILL USE THIS SCORE?
A:  GRE scores are generally valid for up to 5 years.  If you have a GRE score more than 5 years old, it can be considered for admission purposes by program faculty.  You must have either the original score report or have it posted to an official transcript.  Please notify the Office of Student Services in the College of Education (407-823-3723) if you have a GRE score that you would like reviewed by program faculty.

NOTE:  GMAT scores may also be considered for admission to graduate programs in the College of Education.  The minimum GMAT score required is 500.

Q:  HOW SOON WILL I HAVE A DECISION ON MY APPLICATION?
A:  Admission decisions are made on a weekly basis on COMPLETED FILES.  You may expect to receive a letter regarding your admission status (acceptance, denial, or additional information required) generally within a few weeks of submitting your application.  You may monitor the status of your graduate application by checking your account on www.my.ucf

Q: HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED ABOUT MY ADMISSION STATUS?
A:  If you are admitted to a graduate program, you will be sent a letter identifying your faculty advisor’s  name and telephone number, as well as registration information.  You will need to make an appointment with your faculty advisor during your first term in the master’s program to plan out your program of study.

Q:  WHEN CAN I REGISTER FOR COURSES?
A:  If you are admitted to a graduate program, you will be sent an email asking whether you ACCEPT or DECLINE the offer of admission. You will not be authorized to begin registering for courses unless you respond to this email by accepting the offer of admission.   You will be asked via email to ACCEPT or DECLINE the offer of admission through your account on www.my.ucf.

Because you are contacted by both the mailing and email addresses that you provide on your graduate application, please be sure that you keep both methods of contact current with the university.

Q:  HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH COURSES TO REGISTER FOR?
A:  All admitted UCF students have access to an electronic version of their program of study known as the “audit”.  The audit keeps track of your academic progress each term, indicating which course requirements have been met and which course requirements are remaining.   The audit also indicates your advisor’s name and contact information, your overall graduate GPA, and remaining graduation requirements.  Please be sure to view your audit at least once a semester by going to:  www.ucf.edu > Student Self Service > Student Center > Degree Audit.  If you have questions about your audit or need help understanding how to read it, please come to Student Services, ED 110, or call us for assistance:  407-823-3723.

Q:  CAN I APPLY FOR ADMISSION BEFORE I’VE TAKEN THE GRE?
A:  Students may begin taking graduate courses (up to 9 credit hours) while completing GRE requirements.  This requires a separate graduate application to NON-DEGREE SEEKING status.  Courses taken before regular admission to a master’s program are considered post-bac credit and may count in a graduate degree program with the consent of a faculty advisor.  Any graduate credits earned in excess of 9 semester hours and before a student is admitted to a graduate program must be petitioned for use in a graduate degree program.

Q:  WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND AND WANT TO DEFER MY ADMISSION?
A:  If you decide to delay your admission to another term or choose to apply for a different program or under a different status, you must go back online and apply for the new program of choice and pay a new application fee.  You will NOT, however, have to resubmit your supporting application credentials if they have already been received by the university (transcripts, GRE/GMAT scores, references, and so on).

Q:  WHAT IF I DECIDE I’D RATHER ENROLL IN ANOTHER EDUCATION PROGRAM?
A:  If, after enrolling in a graduate program, you decide to move into another program (change majors), this requires that you apply to the new program by going back online to complete a new application.  Again, you will not have to resubmit supporting credentials for the new application (unless required by the new program area) but you will be required to submit a new application and pay the $30.00 application fee.
