Service-Learning Continuum in Teacher Education Courses

Introduction

To ensure a professional, developmental sequence of service-learning for undergraduates in the teacher education program in the College of Education, the Department of Educational Studies has prescribed the following sequence of service-learning designated courses.

Individual Course Description and Criteria on Service-Learning  

*Service hours used to meet the requirements of one course may not be used to meet the requirements of other courses.

*Students who enroll for both EDG 4410 and EDF 4467 in the same semester may complete the 30 hours of service-learning in the same school.

Introduction to the Teaching Profession

To provide students with the opportunity to explore the education profession from the view of contemporary teachers. This experience is linked to the conceptual framework and knowledge base of the course.

  • 15 hours of observation at school settings (elementary, middle, secondary).
  • A formal report regarding observation during service-learning is required

EDF 2085
Introduction to Diversity for Educators

An introduction to cultural factors and their impact on education and life changes.
Explores stereotyping, prejudice and changing classroom demographics. This is a service-learning course, which calls for students to connect classroom knowledge with a service experience in the community.

Complete 15 hours of service in community contexts that serve K-12 students from a selection of the following DIVERSE populations:

AT-RISK - A student who is at risk of underachieving, dropping out or failing school. 
TITLE I - A school is considered low-income if 60% or more of the students are enrolled in the free-lunch program.
ETHNIC SPECIFIC - Schools where the majority of students are from one religious or ethnic group.
EXCEPTIONAL - Gifted, Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Emotionally Handicapped (EH), Physically-Impaired, Mentally-Handicapped, Visually-Impaired, Hearing-Impaired
ALTERNATIVE - In each high school, there should be at least two different alternative programs. Drug-prevention, Drop-out prevention, Pregnant teen programs
ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a program designed to help students make the transition from a foreign language to English.

EDF 4467 - Learning Theory & Assessment

Course Objective:

To acquaint each student with pertinent psychological learning and developmental principles. The student is expected to work with individuals and with small groups of students under the supervision of the classroom teacher. Classroom activities, such as tutoring in an academic subject or working with a small group project, may be assigned at the discretion of the classroom teacher in charge.

In-School Field Experience Hours Required:

  • 15 hours of working with individuals and small groups (tutoring and small group projects)

Fingerprinting Requirement (New): Fingerprinting is required for this field experience for all Orange County and Seminole County placements.

How to sign up for Seminole County placements and fingerprinting:

  1. Register online as a Dividends Volunteer at www.scps.k12.fl.us/community_involvement
  2. Visit 400 East Lake Mary Boulevard, Sanford, FL 32773 for fingerprinting.
    Hours: M-F 8:30 AM – 12:00 noon and 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Appointment not accepted.

How to sign up for fingerprinting for Orange County placements:

  1. Download and print the Security Package. Submit the completed security package to the Office of Clinical Experiences (ED 110) by September 6, 2011.
  2. Register and pre-pay for fingerprinting by going to ocpsteach.sofn.net
    • Employee Type: "New Employee"
    • Select Location: "Unsure"
    • Position: "UCF-EDF 4467"
    • Select: "OCPS Onsite 9/7/11- UCF Main Campus-Education Gym"
    • Pay with credit card or debit card rather than check.
    • Bring receipt with bar code to fingerprinting appointment.

Also, any reference to Educational Studies should be changed to the School of Teaching, Learning, & Leadership.  Finally, I am guessing you need to migrate the page to the new COE website, but please keep in mind students have been noticed about the old URL and this is a crucial time to get filed experiences started, thus if we can make any changes transparent it would be greatly appreciated.

EDG 4410
Teaching Strategies and Classroom Management

Course Objective:

To acquaint students with the professional roles and responsibilities of the classroom teacher. Students will participate in classroom observations, interactions, and instruction through the Junior Achievement Program. Classroom activities, such as correcting student assignments and tests, averaging grades, attending parent-teacher conferences, and monitoring student activities and/or field trips may be assigned at the discretion of the classroom teacher in charge.

In-School Field Experience Hours Required:

15 hours of service-learning in appropriate level/subject area specialization (Junior Achievement lessons, small group instruction, test correction, parent-teacher conferences, monitoring student field trips, etc.

Analysis and Application of Ethical, Legal and Safety Issues in Schools

To explore critical issues that affect the quality and equity of education within the U.S. Students with be given opportunities to observe the forces and factors which directly determine school life. Students, in consultation with the instructor, will select two service-learnings that focus on issues of power, politics, and school reform. Students might attend school board meetings, examine school district boundaries, or visit alternative programs/charter schools outside of regular preservice placement.

  • 15 hours of service-learning related to issues of power, politics and reform.
  • A formal report includes both observational and analytical components as determined by the instructor is required.
