Thomas Brewer has been the Coordinator of Art Education at UCF since 1996. He served in similar positions at three universities before coming to Orlando. He has a B.A. in Art Education and Ceramics from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1973), an M.A. in Art from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (1985), and a Ph.D. in Art Education from Florida State University (1989). After graduating in 1973, Brewer worked as a studio potter for nine years and began teaching in 1982. He has taught art and art education at the K-12 and university levels for the past 25years.

Brewer's research and scholarship in Visual Arts Education has focused on student learning, curriculum and instruction, assessment, and more currently arts education policy. He has published in Studies in Art Education, Visual Arts Research, Arts Education Policy Review, Art Education, School Arts, and a number of abstracts and articles. He has served as President of the Seminar for Research in Art Education and the Chair of the National Art Education Associations Research Commission (1998-2001), the Higher Education Division Director for the Florida Art Education Association, the Chair for the Southeastern College Art Conference Visual Arts Education Policy Committee, and the University of Central Florida representative to the Florida Higher Education Arts Network. He was named the 2002 National Art Education Association Higher Education Art Educator of the Year, the 2006 Florida Art Educator of the Year, and the 2007 National Art Educator of the Year.

His studio work has been included in exhibitions at the South Carolina Museum, Columbia, SC; the Florence Museum of Art, Florence SC; McKissick Museum, Columbia, SC; the Arkansas Art Center and the Arkansas Art Center Decorative Museum, Little Rock, AR; the Evansville Museum of Art, Evansville, IN; LSU-Sheveport; Walton Art Center, Fayetteville, AR; the 2000, 2003, and 2005 Annual Florida Craftsman Exhibition; the American Crafts Council Spotlight Exhibitions, in 2003 and 2006; Seminole Community College, in Sanford, FL; a solo exhibition AdjustSeek at the Florida Crafts Members Gallery 2006; Ohr Rising: Gulf States Competition, Biloxi, MS.; and has a 2007 exhibition scheduled at the Ormond Memorial Museum of Art in Ormond Beach, FL. Brewer is currently represented at the Florida Craftsman Gallery in St. Petersburg, FL; Carol Robinson Gallery, New Orleans, LA; Prairie House, Springfield, IL; and Arts on Douglas, New Smyrna Beach, FL.

Brewer was born 1948 in Champaign, Illinois and has lived in Florida for 18 of the past 23 years. His home and studio has been in New Smyrna Beach, Fl since 2000.
