Education students who excelled in their academics by achieving a high grade point average were celebrated during the Honors in the Major (HIM) Spring semester reception.

Students learned about the HIM program, the most advanced undergraduate research program that provides students with an opportunity to conduct one-on-one research with a faculty member and write the equivalent of a Master’s degree thesis.

HIM is designed for juniors and seniors who are committed to creating independent work in their major. Students research, write, defend, and publish an original Honors thesis that serves as the crowning achievement of their undergraduate career. The thesis is published with the university library and available to researchers worldwide through electronic databases.

HIM students Bethany Fralish, Lucia Pares-Jimenez, Christine Parsons, Afrina Rohani, Mary-Margaret Shimada, and Victoria Taylor each received a $1,000 scholarship.

Drs. Megan Nickels and Andrea Gelfuso received Honors Faculty Awards for their dedication to our college’s undergraduates in their pursuit of research and encouraging students to present at the Undergraduate Research Showcase and the Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence.

The Honors Committee paid homage to The Burnett Honors College’s retiring Dean Alvin Wang with a $1,000 Alvin Wang Honors in the Major Scholarship. An awardee will be receiving the scholarship for the first time during the 2017-2018 academic year.
