Elementary Education Students Mentored Children During Spring Reading Clinic


Elementary Education students developed children’s literacy skills during the first UCF South Lake Campus Spring Reading Clinic. The program included more than 30 children from 13 Lake County elementary schools.

The reading clinic was designed to support undergraduate education students and provide them with an opportunity to work with K-5 children during the evenings along with providing an after school reading program for children in the South Lake community.

During Monday evenings, students in Instructor Marni Kay’s Practicum for Assessment and Instruction of Reading course examined third and fifth graders’ reading abilities by utilizing informal reading assessments to create and implement targeted reading interventions during a 10-week period.

Students in Kay’s Basic Foundations of Reading course worked with children in grades K-2 on Thursday nights. Kay developed a coaching clinic environment by using many of the same structures as a modified lesson study. Our college’s students prepared and facilitated interactive literacy centers and worked in differentiated groups and focused on key skills with the elementary school children.

On the last night of the clinic, the children selected a new chapter book and pair of UCF sunglasses and watched a slideshow of reading clinic memories with their parents. Elementary Education students also conducted their first parent-teacher conference about the children’s reading progress.

Students enrolled in the Language Arts in the Elementary School course this summer will be working with students in grades K-5 during the UCF South Lake Summer Reading and Storytelling Camp.
