Comprehensive Exams

All master's and doctoral degree candidates are required to take comprehensive exams. If you are Masters degree candidate, you must pass the exam to qualify for internships. If you are a Doctoral degree candidate, you must pass the exam to qualify for dissertation hours.

Comprehensive exams consist of summative open book essay questions that are customized for your individual program of study. You are given a study guide before the exam, and the exam is delivered via email for you to work on over a weekend.

To take the comprehensive exam, you must:

  • successfully complete all required core and specialization courses.
  • apply by completing and submitting the Comprehensive Exam Form.

The form is available online (under Resources/Forms) or from the College of Education Student Services (on the first floor of the Education Complex). The form should be turned in at the beginning of the semester when you plan to take the exam.
