How do you derive research questions from published literature? How do you prepare proposals for presentations at professional conferences? Did you know AECT conference will be hosted in Orlando this coming year? What are we planning to do to make a big splash at the 2008 conference? Who will get to keep the best “White Elephant” holiday present this year?
During this seminar, students who attended the 2007 AECT conference will discuss their experiences, and Dr. Hirumi will cover guidelines for preparing conference presentation proposals. We will also discuss research and development ideas and facilitate the formatiion of teams to work on projects and present at AECT 2008.
Please feel free to review samples of accepted proposals written by Dr. Hirumi [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]. I also strongly encourage you to get a copy of, “Getting Started in Instructional Technology Research” that may be purchased online.
Join students, faculty and working professionals across disciplines who are interested in the training and educational applications of Instructional Technology. All are welcome, including kids and significant others. Also, please invite anyone you think may be interested. See attached for directions to Dr. Hirumi's house.

Fall 2007 Research Seminar/Pot Luck Social Kick Off, Sunday, Sept. 23 at Dr. Hirumi's house.
September's research seminar we had Dr. Robert Hays come in as our guest speaker. Dr. Hays has conducted basic and applied research in learning processes, instructional effectiveness, and human performance improvement. During the Research Seminar, Dr. Hays highlighted key trends and issues discussed in his recently published book “The Science of Learning: A Systems Theory Approach”, including research on instructional simulations, games and learning styles. Refining Presentation Proposals for Submission
February’s monthly research seminar gave students an opportunity to present draft conference presentation proposals and receive feedback from students and faculty prior to submission. Participants saw examples of proposals and had the opportunity to discuss research and proposal preparation experiences and processes.
All students preparing presentation proposals for the 2007 AECT conference, as well as other conferences were invited to present proposals. Students who were not planning to submit, were still encouraged to attend to gain insights on the proposal preparation and evaluation process, and to provide feedback. Official AECT evaluation forms and criteria was used as a basis for discussion. |

December’s Research Seminar/Pot Luck Social was held at Dr. Hirumi's

For the 2:30pm Reading/Discussion group, participants were encouraged to read and identify questions from “Beyond Edutainment: Exploring the Educational Potential of Computer Games.” Dr. Hirumi led a discussion on how to derive research questions from the paper, as well as derive research questions in general.
At 6:00pm , Dr. Hirumi presented guidelines for preparing proposals for presentation at professional conferences. Please feel free to review samples of accepted proposals written by Dr. Hirumi [1] [2] [3] [4] [5].

Nov.4 Monthly Research Seminar and Pot-Luck Social on UCF's Main Campus
Dr. Mike Moshell and Nan Schultz lead demonstrations and discussions on the educational applications of Second Life. Participants were given opportunities to access and play with the virtual environment http://secondlife.com/. Many educators across the country (including a Harvard Law Professor) is using Second Life to create virtual educational learning environments, but BEWARE, others are also using Second Life to create other types of virtual environments. |

Sept 10,2006 Monthly Research Seminar and Pot-Luck Social at Dr. Hirumi's house
Instructional (computer) games (aka. serious games) are reemerging as an important outgrowth of the video game industry. On Sunday, Sept. 10th:
- Representatives from Tabula Digita will be demonstrating what I believe is the one of the best educational games (in terms of production value) now on the market on algebra for high school students (to see a trailer and download a demo of the game, go to: http://tabuladigita.com and Dimenxian.com); and
- Representatives from Lockheed Martin and the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA) will be presenting the latest prototype of a game being designed to train navy sailors on how to put out fires.
We also began a “reading/discussion” group, starting with the most recent and comprehensive review of literature on educational (video) games. |

What are students in Instructional Technology doing in terms of research and conference presentations? What research opportunities are there with Lockheed Martin and FIEA?
On June 4th, students with accepted conference proposals are encouraged to attend and give an overview of their research. If you are not planning to present this year, that's fine. Come hear what others are doing, gain insights for developing your own proposal for future conferences, as well as provide input to help others.
I will also be describing opportunities to participate in research with Lockheed Martin and the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA) on the design and development of instructional games. In addition, come learn what the AECT: UCF Chapter is doing to support travel to conference, as well as what they have planned over the summer and next year. |

From R2D2 to the Matrix: A Galaxy of Online Learning Style, Motivational, and Blended Learning Examples
Creating a motivational and interactive online environment can enhance student engagement, retention, completion, and overall enthusiasm for this new learning mode. Using research-based best practices, Dr. Bonk will provide dozens of pedagogical ideas and solutions to motivate students in online learning environments. His ideas and techniques will be linked to ten motivational principles related to climate, feedback, engagement, choice, meaningfulness, variety, curiosity, tension, interactivity and collaboration, and goal setting.

AECT Organizational Meeting and Conference Proposal Workshop - Sunday, January 8, 2006
The AECT UCF student group held an administrative meeting Dr. Hirumi's house at 3pm on Sunday, January 8, 2006. Items discussed were programs were the year's Potluck/Socials. Among the topics planned for this year are a panel session on dissertation issues, eLearning, mLearning, performance support, the business of consulting, and becoming a professor. The administrative group welcomes your feedback on these topics and hopes to see you at future meetings. At 4 PM interested students worked on proposals for presentations for AECT October 2006. |

Fall 2005: Scholarship.
The Instructional Technology program is excited to announce continuation of a special 3-year scholarship for new doctoral candidates in Instructional Technology. The scholarship recipient will work with faculty, staff and students, as well as professionals in the film and gaming industry at the new Center for Research on Electronic Arts, Technology and Entertainment (CREATE) in downtown Orlando. Application deadline: December 15, 2005.

Monthly research seminar and pot luck social featured Dr. Michael Moshell, professor of Digital Media and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida. Dr. Moshell sets forth six propositions and asserts that they are meta-principles * that is, ideas that generate and shape the operational principles by which media should be created.
