School Psychology Program

Supervised Internship

The school psychology internship is an opportunity to integrate academic and practical aspects of the school psychology program with the daily activities of a public school psychology department. The University of Central Florida interns will be placed in various environments for five days a week for approximately 1,200 hours during one school year. The intern will be under the direct and continuing supervision of a School Psychologist certified by the Florida Department of Education.

Procedures will follow the Ethical Principles of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the Florida Association of School Psychologists (FASP). Interns will assume full responsibility for being thoroughly familiar with ethical principles and for adhering to them at all times. Interns will also comply with pertinent local, state, and federal legislation, regulations, and guidelines relevant to the practice of school psychology.

Interns will be given a variety of duties and responsibilities including:

1. Conducting evaluation
2. Working as a team member by participating in Child Study Services Team and Individualized Education Program (IEP) team meetings
3. Observing students in classrooms, consulting with teachers, parents and school administrators
4. Attending professional development inservice training
5. Counseling students individually and in groups
6. Keeping a log which outlines specific duties and services rendered

The intern will have an opportunity to work with regular and special education students at elementary, middle, and high school levels.

School District Student Services personnel will assist school psychology interns in fulfilling the requirements for their program by:

1. Providing direct and continuing supervision by a School Psychologist
2. Providing the intern with necessary documents to follow all legislation, guidelines, and regulations relevant to school children at the national, state and local levels.
3. Providing the intern with direct feedback regarding her/his progress, strengths, and weaknesses.
4. Providing a written evaluation of the intern to the university supervisor and signing the internship verification form.

The intern will be paid by the school district for services rendered during her/his internship for the school year; however, this should not be construed as an obligation on the part of the school district. In the case that the district is unable to commit to payment, the prospective intern will be notified prior to accepting such a commission. If the student agrees to engage in all duties and responsibilities, she/he will conduct her/himself in a professional manner as outlined by the school district and the university supervisor.
