Mission Statement
Faculty members in the Department of Teaching and Learning Principles (TLP) are teachers and scholars, who develop, apply, and disseminate knowledge about teaching and learning in grades 1-20, build partnerships with schools, school districts, businesses and agencies, form collaborative learning communities, and provide a professional education to empower graduates to be exemplary members of a diverse and global community. Faculty members carry on active research agendas and bring research-based practices to the classroom to give credit to what is already known in the field.
The Department of Teaching and Learning Principles offers undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs that are accredited at the national level by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved at the state level by the Florida Department of Education. Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, and/or Master of Education degrees leading to initial certification or advanced professional development are offered in Art Education, Elementary Education, English/Language Arts Education, Foreign Language Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Social Science Education, Reading Education, and Technical Education and Industry Training. Full-time (Ph.D.) and/or part-time (Ed.D.) doctoral study is offered in all fields where advanced master’s programs exist in the department. People seeking careers in teaching at the Community College level can attain their credentials through both the Master of Arts and Education Specialist degree programs.
TLP aspires to touch the future by our focus on excellence in teaching. The reputation of the department emphasizes close personal attention to students’ professional needs, early and sustained school experiences for students, and excellence in preparing teachers for K-20 teaching. Many TLP faculty members are recognized, both nationally and internationally, for their research and scholarly activities.
