Differences between the Ph.D. and Ed.D. Programs

The Ph.D. and Ed.D. are two related, but significantly different doctoral programs. You should carefully match your specialization focus, career goals, and current work environment to the appropriate doctoral program. Here are some things to think about:

As noted above, the Ph.D. is research oriented degree that is designed to prepare candidates for research-oriented positions in higher education, research centers, and in business and industry. In contrast, the Ed.D. is an applied degree that is designed to prepare candidates for faculty positions in teaching oriented colleges/universities and application-oriented positions (e.g., as instructional designers and/or project managers) in business and industry.

The Ph.D. in Education has a core that focuses upon research and statistics. While in some ways, this research core may be academically challenging, it is relatively generic in terms of prior academic training and life experiences. The Ed.D. in Education, on the other hand, has a core of courses that focus upon practical teaching and/or instructional design issues. You are expected to have appropriate prior academic training and life experiences to be a proper "fit" into this core.

Both the Ph.D. and Ed.D. in Education are now organized to support full-time students as well as part-time students who may need to work. We strongly encouraged students to pursue doctoral degrees on a full-time basis, but it is possible to complete either programs as a part-time student taking one or two courses per term.

Additional Doctoral Program Considerations

If your prior Master’s degree is not in Instructional Design & Technology or closely related field such as Educational Technology, you may need to take some perquisites.

Table 1 lists essential pre-requisite areas for both the Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs of study. If you have not taken a graduate level course (e.g., during your master’s degree) or if you do not have significant experience in the areas listed in column 1, then you may need to take comparable coursework as pre-requisites or as an integral part of your program of study (beyond the 69 hours of coursework that is prescribed as a minimum).

If you have applied for financial assistance and scholarships, admission to a full-time doctoral program may come with some form of financial assistance. However, there is no guarantee! Admissions and financial assistance are two separate processes. Keep this in mind, especially if you have to pay “out-of-state” tuition and fees! Plan well in advance to search for financial assistance that might reduce or waive those fees! Just because you are an international or domestic out-of-state student, admission does not waive those high out-of-state fees!

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education

Minimum Hours Required for Ph.D. - 69 Credit Hours

Core Courses—24 Credit Hours

  • IDS 7501 Issues and Research in Education (3 credit hours)
  • IDS 7938 Research Cluster Seminar (3 credit hours)
  • IDS 7500 Seminar in Educational Research (repeatable, 6 credit hours)
  • EDF 7475 Qualitative Research in Education (3 credit hours)
  • EDF 7403 Quantitative Foundations of Educational Research (3 credit hours)
  • EDF 7463 Analysis of Survey, Record and Other Qualitative Data (3 credit hours)
  • IDS 7502 Case Studies in Research Design (3 credit hours)

Instructional Technology Track - 21 Credit Hours Minimum

This track prepares students for teaching and research in the field of instructional systems in professions such as university professor or corporate researcher. The focus is upon the application of appropriate instructional technologies to the adult learner.

  • IDS 6504 Adult Learning (3 credit hours)
  • IDS 6503 International Trends in Instructional Systems (3 credit hours)

Internship—3 Credit Hours Minimum

Specialization in all tracks must include 3 credit hours of internship (minimum)

Dissertation—24 Credit Hours Minimum

Doctoral students must present a prospectus for the dissertation to the doctoral adviser, prepare a proposal and present to the dissertation committee, and defend the final research submission with the dissertation committee.

Candidacy

To enter candidacy for the PhD, students must have an overall 3.0 grade point average on all graduate work included in the planned program and pass all required examinations.

Candidacy Examinations

  • Examinations must be completed prior to admission to candidacy.

  • Examinations will be scheduled by the student and major adviser. The associate dean for graduate studies and research must be notified of the date and location of the exam 30 days in advance.

Doctor of Education (EdD) in Education

The Doctor of Education program provides advanced study for the education practitioner who desires a more in-depth understanding of curricular theory.

Prerequisites—15 Credit Hours

The prerequisite core is defined by the course requirements listed below. Alternative prerequisite courses may be used with the approval of specialization faculty and the program coordinator.

  • EDG 6223 Curriculum Theory and Organization (3 credit hours)
  • EDF 6259 Learning Theories Applied to Classroom Instruction and Management (3 credit hours)
  • EDF 6401 Statistics for Educational Data (3 credit hours) (or equivalent)
  • EDF 6432 Measurement and Evaluation in Education (3 credit hours)
  • EDF 6481 Fundamentals of Graduate Research in Education (3 credit hours)

Required Courses—39 Credit Hours

Core—24 Credit Hours

Instructional Technology Specialization—15 Credit Hours

Students must select a specialization area, for example: Curriculum and Instruction, Counselor Education, Instructional Technology, Math Education, or another area in the College of Education and Human Performance that offers doctoral-level course work.

At least one course in the specialization must be a formal course, exclusive of independent study. The specialization course work must include a minimum of 9 credit hours at the 7000 level. Specialization courses must be approved by the student‘s adviser and the program coordinator by the end of the student’s first semester in the program.

Additional specialization course work may be required prior to entering candidacy to ensure that a student has adequate background knowledge and research skills to successfully complete their dissertation. Applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members in the area of specialization prior to applying. Additional information about specialization areas can be found on the program website.

Dissertation—15 Credit Hours

Doctoral students must present a prospectus for the dissertation to the doctoral adviser, prepare a proposal and present it to the dissertation committee, and defend the final research submission with the dissertation committee.

  • EME 7980 Dissertation (15 credit hours minimum)

Candidacy

To enter candidacy for the EdD, students must have an overall 3.0 GPA on all graduate work included in the planned program and pass the required comprehensive examination.

  • The examination must be completed prior to admission to candidacy.
  • The examination will be scheduled by the student and major adviser. The associate dean for graduate studies must be notified of the date and location of the exam 30 days in advance.
  • Students must be enrolled in the university during the semester an examination is taken.
