Child, Family and Community Sciences

The Department of Child, Family, and Community Sciences (CFCS) offers undergraduate degree programs in Early Childhood Education, Exceptional Education, and Sports & Fitness. At the graduate level, CFCS offers programs in Counselor Education, Early Childhood, Exceptional Education and School Psychology. Additionally, certificate programs in Marriage and Family Therapy, Play Therapy, and Sport Leadership are available.
Students completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education are qualified to teach Pre-Kindergarten through grade 3 upon graduation and are eligible to apply for Florida Teaching Certification. A Bachelor of Science degree in Exceptional Education is available for individuals interested in teaching exceptional students in grades K-12. The Sports and Fitness Bachelor of Science degree prepares graduates for positions with school and university athletic programs, community sports organizations, private and public fitness and recreation programs, and multipurpose facilities.
Masters level programs are available in Counselor Education, with emphasis on school counseling or mental health counseling. The Counselor Education program operates a Community Counseling Clinic on the main campus. Advanced graduate students under the supervision of university faculty members staff the clinic. In the area of Early Childhood, two degrees are available: Early Childhood Education M.Ed. and Early Childhood Development and Education M.A. These Early Childhood degree programs focus on preparation of professional personnel with advanced competence. The Masters Degree and certification programs in Exceptional Education prepare professionals to teach in Exceptional Education.
The Specialist Program in School Psychology is an intensive two- year course of studies which prepares graduates for roles as School Psychologists. Extensive work in field settings is an integral requirement of the course of studies.
The department offers two courses of study leading to the Ph.D. in Education. One focuses on Counselor Education and prepares personnel for advanced positions. The other is in the area of Exceptional Education and focuses on the preparation of personnel for positions in higher education and leadership roles. Each of these Ph.D. tracks are designed to prepare highly competent doctoral level professionals who will assume leadership positions in teaching, research and service in their respective fields.

Educational Research, Technology and Leadership

The Department of Educational Research, Technology and Leadership is guided by the University's mission of "achieving international prominence in key graduate education and research programs, developing a global perspective in the curriculum, promoting inclusiveness and diversity, and helping UCF become America's leading partnership university; and by the College of Education's vision of "scholarly leadership in the education profession, well-educated students, rigorous curricula, research and scholarship, promotion of social justice, and service." The Department of Educational Research, Technology and Leadership (ERTL) houses graduate-level programs in Educational Leadership K-12, Higher Education and Policy Studies, and Instructional Technology/Media. The Department's Educational Research faculty is responsible for training College of Education students in Educational Research, Measurement and Evaluation. Program Goals for Graduate Education The area of Educational Research seeks to prepare students with the knowledge of a variety of research methods that will contribute to their reflective thinking as applied to their professional environment, to prepare students who will conduct high quality inquiry related to their practice, and to conduct inquiry that meets the high standards of the academic disciplines and addresses challenging issues in educational and training settings. Educational Leadership prepares leaders for metropolitan school districts with particular attention to the leadership needs of Central Florida K-12 school districts. This program seeks to further the professional development of leaders that enhance their abilities to develop, utilize, and disseminate educational research. The program in Higher Education and Policy Studies prepares individuals to work in various post-secondary education positions: universities, colleges and community colleges, as well as in government policy settings. The Community College Education Certificate offers a concentration in this area. The program prepares leaders in teaching, administrative, and student service roles, and seeks to develop researchers who contribute to the educational policy arena locally, nationally, and internationally. The Instructional Technology/Media program is divided into two complementary areas: Instructional Systems and Educational Technology. The Educational Technology area prepares teachers to integrate technology into K-16 and higher education curricula; prepares technology leaders for school settings, to work as library media specialists, and empowers site-based technology facilitators. The Instructional Systems area prepares individuals to manage the design, development and delivery of technology-based instruction in business, industry, government, military, and higher education environments.

Department Chair: Karen Biraimah, Ph.D.
The Department of Educational Studies serves all students in the College of Education. The Department provides instruction in the core professional courses that address the competencies and skills needed by all undergraduate majors. These courses emphasize learning theory, teaching strategies, diversity, and the social, philosophical and historical foundations. The Department provides courses for all masters and doctoral programs in education, and coordinates the core courses for the Curriculum and Instruction Doctoral Program and the Graduate Certificate in Initial Teacher Preparation. The Department houses the following degree programs: M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction, M.A. in Applied Learning and Instruction, M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership, and Ed.S., Ed.d. in Curriculum and Instruction. Graduate certificate options include Gifted Education, Multicultural and Global Education, Initial Teacher Professional Preparation, Professoriate, and Urban Education. Educational Studies graduate courses provide opportunities for students to advance their knowledge and application skills related to multicultural, social and psychological factors, curriculum and instructional theories, and the historical and philosophical factors that influence education.

Teaching and Learning Principles
Department Chair: Michael Hynes, Ph.D.
The Department of Teaching and Learning Principles has 59 full-time faculty members and offers courses, graduate certificates, and undergraduate and graduate degrees in three major program areas: elementary/middle school education, secondary/post-secondary education and training, and K-12 education. The department also supports specialization tracks in selected College of Education doctoral programs. The primary mission of this department is to provide quality professional education for those entering careers as educators and trainers and for practicing teachers seeking to enhance their professional knowledge and skills through advanced studies. In addition, the department offers community college teaching tracks in several graduate programs for persons interested in post-secondary teaching careers.
